Roofpop Farm Tour - Brooklyn Grange

BNY-from-77-1024x680.jpgRegister for a Tour of our Farm in Brooklyn

Come check out the world’s largest rooftop farm in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard!  We’ll tell you about our daily operations and farming methods, the basics of our business model, and the environmental benefits of urban ag and rooftop farming, then give you some time to explore.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a private property, and is not open to the public; however, in an effort to offer public access to the farm, we will lead two weekly tours of that rooftop on Wednesday mornings. This access is intended for individuals, families and groups of four or fewer. Pre-registration is required and unregistered guests will not be granted admission.

A Brooklyn Grange tour guide will meet registrants in the lobby of The Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92, the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s public museum and exhibition center, located at the corner of Flushing Ave and Carlton Street. Upon checking everyone in, the BG tour guide will escort the group up to the farm; late arrivals will not be permitted up to the farm unattended, so please be on time. The tour will last about 30 minutes, following which we will pop over to the farmstand for honey, hot sauce, and veggies before being escorted back down through the security doors into BLDG 92. Including the travel time to and from the farm, please allow 75 to 90 minutes for this visit. The tour will be offered rain or shine, so please dress appropriately (closed-toed shoes, sunscreen even in overcast weather, layers because it is colder on the roof).

Why not make a day of it? The Brooklyn Navy Yard’s BLDG 92 Museum is a great place to learn and explore. Showcasing the history and innovation of The Brooklyn Navy Yard from the Revolutionary War to the revolution in jobs and industry happening in present day NYC, the museum is free to the public and has a revolving schedule of amazing exhibitions. It is open from 12pm till 6pm on Wednesdays; hours on other days and more info are available on their website.

In addition to your tour of the farm, experience the “Past, Present & Future” of the Navy Yard on a guided tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92. BLDG 92, housed in both the 1857 Marine Commandant’s House and a LEED Platinum green building, is home to interactive exhibitions which explore contributions made at the Yard to American industry, technology, innovation and manufacturing. Once America’s premier naval industrial facility, the Yard is now home to the greatest concentration of manufacturing and green businesses in NYC. Come see for yourself!
