Osa Sea Turtle Conservation

Posted on About by Kevin Peterson · May 18, 2015 10:50 PM

The Osa peninsula is an important nesting site for four species of marine turtle: Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea), Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), and Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea). In Carate, a remote community involved area, a hatchery works as a hub for COTORCO and the local efforts in sea turtle conservation. Evidence for high levels of nesting and predation activity reported here indicate that conservation efforts in these areas should be a priority for turtle conservation. COTORCO strives to meet these needs with beach patrols, nest monitoring, turtle tagging, hatchery, and community education.

Project Objectives:

·         Improve local unemployment

·         Decrease poaching of sea turtle nests

·         Decrease depredation of sea turtle nests

·         Improve the current lack of environmental education of children and adults alike

·         Local stewardship of homeland

Camaronal National Wildlife Refuge  - Sea Turtle Conservation

Volunteer w/ EPS Guancaste - Travel w/ EPS to Costa Rica

General Information: Camaronal National Wildlife Refuge is situated on the pacific coast of Guanacaste.  A haven for surfers and lovers of watersports, Guanacaste boasts some of the most important and productive sea turtle nesting beaches in the entire western hemisphere.

In 1998 The Camaronal Foundation was established to help provide local support the Camaronal Refuge.   Camaronal Foundation is committed to the preservation of the full range of natural resources protected with the refuge and also works closely with the Ministry of Environment and the National Park System to promote and collaborate with the political and legal system dedicated to environmental issues.  The Camaronal Refuge is home to four species of marine turtles that inhabit the waters of Costa Rica: The Leatherback (Dermochelys Coriacea), Kemp´s Ridley (Lepidochelys Olivacea), Hawksbill (Eretmochelys Imbricata) and Black (Chelonia Midas Agassizii). All these species have been declared in danger of extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (UICN) and there is a major worldwide effort for their preservation.

Location: The Camaronal Wildlife Refuge protects mangroves and turtle nesting beaches on the Pacific Coast of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica and is close to the fishing town of Samara.

Marine turtles are reptiles and have existed for over 100 million years. Turtles have survived through dinosaur’s extinction, ice ages and natural disasters. However, they could soon disappear due to the uncontrolled actions of man.

If you are interested in working with the Camaronal Refuge, alongside the professional park rangers and with the backing of the Costa Rican government, you have an ideal opportunity to learn about restoration of the ecosystem and the chance to protect the flora and fauna as part of a highly valued team.

The Eco Preservation Society's volunteer program in the Manuel National park provides the traveler with a unique vantage to experience what Forbes Magazine listed as one of the most beautiful parks in the world. Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica is the crown jewel of Costa Rica’s National park system. Working behind the scenes assisting park rangers, EPS volunteers are exposed to a unique vantage point to experience the wonders of Manuel Antonio in a way that is not possible on a 3 hour visit. Volunteers will be working to create and maintain visitor trails and other park infrastructure, while at the same time experiencing the park in a more intimate way that is only possible with the type of immersion this program provides. Volunteers share meals with park ranger staff in their brand new facility in the heart of the park. Volunteers will have an opportunity to interact and learn from the experienced nature interpreters that know every aspect of this complex and dynamic eco system.

Volunteers are housed in the historic Zona Americana, constructed during banana republic days when the local economy was dominated by United Fruit Company from 1935 to 1955. The campus like setting featured a stunning vistas, community pool, tennis courts, schools, a movie theater (now a meeting hall) and even a one lane bowling alley.

Cabo Blanco National Wildlife Refuge - The Absolute Nature Reserve

Conquistadores named this area Cabo Blanco for its pristine white sand beaches and cliffs, however it was a benevolent couple from Sweden - Nicolas Wessberg and Karen Mogensen - who established the Reserva Natural Absoluta Cabo Blanco, preserving forever one of the most pristine marine ecosystems in all of Central America.. Appalled by the first clear-cut in the area in the 1960s, the pioneering couple launched an international appeal to save the forest. Their efforts resulted in the creation of not only the 12-square-km (4½-square-mile) reserve but also to the establishment of Costa Rica's national park service.
