Abode of the Clouds / Garo Hills, North East India
In the Garo Hills, North East India, local communities are taking the lead in adapting to climate change. By abandoning the age old tradition of slash and burn "jhum" cultivation in favor of large scale ecorestorative projects, the Garo's are actively creating a favorable environment for a wide variety of flora and fauna, including the Asian elephant and the Hoolock Gibbon. IUCN NL and the Wildlife Trust of India support these efforts by cooperating closely with the local communities.
"Abode of the Clouds" is a film by Megan Haagh and Paul Hendrix, narrated by John D. Liu. It is the result of two years of reporting on the elephant corridor projects in the Garo Hills and is a part of IUCN NL's What if we Change project.
Hope in a Changing Climate
A major project is restoring fertility and hope to China's Loess Plateau, until recently one of the poorest regions of the country. Centuries of continuous agriculture have removed the trees and leaving land vulnerable to erosion from wind and rain. An area the size of Belgium, its once fertile soils have been washed away, leaving a blighted land scarred with deep ravines - and farmers scarcely able to make a living.

Camaronal National Wildlife Refuge - Sea Turtle ConservationCamaronal Wildlife Refuge is part of the Tempisque Conservation Area, on the Guanacaste Coast, on the northern Pacific of Costa Rica. A haven for surfers and lovers of water sports, Guanacaste boasts some of the most important and productive sea turtle nesting beaches in the entire western hemisphere. The Camaronal Refuge is only 30 minutes from Playa Sámara. The refuge was created to protect nesting sites for Leatherback, Kemp's Ridley and Hawksbill sea turtles. The success of the program has resulted in the arrival of thousands of sea turtles to the beaches within the refuge. Cabo Blanco National Wildlife Refuge - The Absolute Nature ReserveConquistadores named this area Cabo Blanco for its pristine white sand beaches and cliffs, however it was a benevolent couple from Sweden - Nicolas Wessberg and Karen Mogensen - who established the Reserva Natural Absoluta Cabo Blanco, preserving forever one of the most pristine marine ecosystems in all of Central America.. Appalled by the first clear-cut in the area in the 1960s, the pioneering couple launched an international appeal to save the forest. Their efforts resulted in the creation of not only the 12-square-km (4½-square-mile) reserve but also to the establishment of Costa Rica's national park service.
