Unusual deep sea octopus filmed at record depth

Michael Vecchione from the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC discovered the mysterious animal near Necker Island in the Hawaiian archipelago while collecting sediment samples in an underwater vehicle.

He was excited to see something he didn’t recognise. “It is almost certainly a new species,” he says. And it may even belong to a whole new genus.
